November 2009 - REGION’S RISING FASHION STARS COME TOGETHER AT BIC

Some of the region’s brightest fashion entrepreneurs will be joining forces in the name of charity next month for the North East BIC’s annual Christmas event.

A fashion show with a seasonal twist is set to take place in the BIC’s recently refurbished Atrium area, with all profits from the evening going to the Grace House appeal. In keeping with the BIC’s reputation as a breeding ground for enterprise, all aspects of the event are being taken care of by aspiring entrepreneurs, many of whom have started their own businesses in the region’s burgeoning fashion industry.

Paul McEldon, chief executive of the North East BIC, said: “We see this as not only an opportunity to raise money for Grace House, and to provide a great night for our tenants and clients, but as a chance to provide a platform and raise the profile of the young and talented people we are currently assisting in this area of business development.”

The co-ordination of the evening, billed as a fashion show and Christmas market, is being overseen by Carmel Hutchinson, 22 and from Sunderland, who is in the process of starting her own events company, Hauterfly. Carmel has arranged for a range of new businesses to occupy ten stalls at the event, selling a range of products from designer cupcakes to unique lingerie.

The fashion show itself will be made up of three separate showcases from exciting new businesses, Era Vintage, Rare Ape and Kiwi Boutique, all of which will be displaying their winter collections.

Era Vintage was established by Carly Walkington earlier this year as an online boutique, which now also trades from premises in Sunderland city centre. After living in Los Angeles and becoming a huge fan of the vintage stores on Melrose Avenue, Carly decided to venture into the field herself upon returning to her native North East with assistance from business advisers at the BIC. With her passion for fashion history and spotting pieces that revive fashion eras of the past, she aims to create a unique collection of styles and classic pieces.

Rare Ape is a Vintage and Retro clothing shop based in Sunderland. Proprietor Gareth Brazier consulted with BIC advisers before taking control of the clothing enterprise earlier this year, and was recently named Young Business Person of the Year at the Sunderland Echo Portfolio Awards.

Carmel Hutchinson of Hauterfly Events said: “This event is shaping up to be a really stylish seasonal treat for attendees, who will get the opportunity to source unique Christmas gifts from the stalls, whilst getting a first look at some truly cutting-edge fashion, as well as contributing to a good cause.”

The event takes place on Thursday 3rd December at the North East BIC. For enquiries and tickets call Chris Hair on 0191 516 6121, or email chris.hair@ne-bic.co.uk.
